The Kuwaiti Crisis of 1990-1991

The Gulf Crisis if 1990-1991 was one of the most significant international crises after the World War II. The Persian Gulf region is one of the most important strategic centers of the modern world. Its importance grows both for the oil industry as a strategic means, and for geopolitical character of the area. The states of East and West were struggling for getting the influence over this region. This area became one of the most important centers after finding oil in the Persian Gulf. Progressive industrialized countries were eager to have a prevailing role there and when the influence one of them was decreasing, the other replaced the vacuum. European approach to the ethno-political conflicts of the South Caucasus

The Caucasus is a multifarious region, where different religions, cultures and ethnic problems come across. At the same time, the Caucasus is the scene for many internal and regional armed conflicts and distinguished by the collision of regional and international powers’ interests. Its strategic importance grows by the presence of its oil. It is the region where the collapse of the Soviet Union caused the most damage. A large number of ethno-political conflicts on the territory of the former USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) have been caused by grave mistakes of the Soviet government. These conflicts were generated by arbitrary territorial changes violated the integrity of ethnic groups. This region was the witness of the bloody ethno-political conflicts, which caused the population migration, the increase of Islamic radicalism and terrorism escalation. The various conflicts have cut the region’s lifelines, isolating neighbouring countries from each other, and destroying their economies. The complicated mosaic map of the Soviet Union seemed to be resolved only by means of conflicts and creation of states de facto. On present the South Caucasus territory, just three large-scale armed conflicts over the Nagorno Karabakh, Abkhazia and the South Ossetia took place.
